Describe the Stage Memory Theory Essay - 275 Words

Describe the Stage Memory Theory (Essay Sample) Content: Surname:Instructor:Course:Date:Stage model of memoryMemory is described as the process by which we process and preserve information. It is as well referred to as a structure or process involved in the storage and consequent retrieval of information. According to stage theory model of memory information, is processed and then stored in three stages i.e. sensory memory, working memory and lastly the long term memory.Sensory memory stage is involved with the processing of stimuli from the environment within seconds of the sensory register. The information stored in sensory memory is limited to about seven elements. The pieces of information are held for about a half or three seconds before being discarded or passed to the working memory. The sensory will allow screen input of the relevant information based on the task at hand readying it for automatic processing.Working memory also referred to as the short-term memory temporarily holds information and at the time assigns meaning, links the information and as well does inference and organization of the information. At this stage, encoding was done whereby information is sorted into systematic chunks. Information that is not encoded is lost after 10 seconds (Matlin 56).The long-term memory is capable of holding up millions of information pieces over a long period. Working memory and long-term memory are held together by encoding and retrieval processes.. Long term memory serves as a permanent and indefinite capacity. We forget some of the information due to reasons such as memory trace decay or fading. Information is held for 15 to 30 seconds after which the trace decays or fades in case the information is not rehearsed.Interference as well causes forgetting as some memory competes with each other leading to in...
